Anya is the nurse aboard the Tulpar in Mouthwashing. She provides medical care, conducts the crew's psychological evaluations and becomes central to understanding the ship's failures of safety and leadership. Her quiet manner should not be mistaken for a lack of insight or competence. Much of her story concerns the difference between recognizing danger and having the power to stop it.
The first sections introduce her work with limited spoilers. The clearly marked story section then discusses her disclosures, the implied assault and her death. For the other four human crew members and their jobs, start with the character overview.
01
What does Anya do on the Tulpar?
Anya's medical role includes caring for the crew and performing psychological evaluations. Before the crash, those duties place her in conversations about how people are coping with the voyage. Afterward, her work becomes urgent as the crew faces severe injury, dwindling resources and confinement.
Her position does not give her command of the ship. She must depend on other people to take concerns seriously and respond appropriately. That limitation matters: a nurse can notice a problem, communicate it and provide care without being able to control another crew member's actions or secure a safe workplace alone.
When following her scenes, pay attention to the conditions surrounding her work. Who has the authority to make a decision? Who can refuse to cooperate? Who is expected to keep helping regardless? Those questions explain more about Anya's situation than judging whether she appears confident in a particular conversation.
02
Read her care separately from her confidence
Anya's care for Curly after the crash is one of the clearest examples of responsibility continuing under terrible conditions. Curly cannot speak for himself, and his injuries make him dependent on the others. Anya remains involved in his medical care even as the situation becomes more frightening and unstable.
Hesitation or visible distress does not establish that she lacks knowledge. The story places difficult tasks in an environment with limited supplies and little protection for the person performing them. Treating every struggle as a personal failure ignores the circumstances that make the work so difficult.
The same caution applies to her psychological evaluations. They are part of her job within the fiction, not a clinical diagnosis of the characters supplied by the game. Anya's conversations can reveal discomfort and tension without giving the reader grounds to assign a real psychiatric condition to anyone aboard.
03
Her personality extends beyond the crisis
The official anniversary Q&A offers glimpses of Anya away from the Tulpar. Narrative designer and art lead Johanna Kasurinen describes her experimenting with clothes while working within financial limits. Another answer discusses her preference for familiar takeaway food over cooking.
These details are small, but useful. They give Anya preferences and an ordinary life beyond the scenes in which she is frightened or caring for someone else. They should not be stretched into a complete biography or used to calculate an exact age, income or nationality.
Her posture also invites speculation. When asked why Anya often rests a hand beneath her chin, the Q&A gives a brief explanation that she has much to think about. It does not provide a hidden diagnostic code. Allowing a gesture to remain a gesture can produce a more accurate reading than attaching a theory to every animation.
04
Full story spoilers: what Anya discloses
Full spoilers from this point onward, including sexual assault, pregnancy and suicide. The discussion describes the narrative without reproducing graphic material.
Anya tells Curly that she is pregnant and expresses fear concerning Jimmy. The surrounding dialogue and circumstances strongly imply that Jimmy sexually assaulted her. The assault itself is not depicted. That distinction preserves how the game communicates the event without weakening the seriousness of what her disclosures establish.
It is not necessary to invent an unseen conversation or a detailed history of repeated incidents to explain her fear. The game supplies enough context to examine the immediate failure: she needs safety from a person who remains aboard the same confined ship, and the captain does not provide an effective protective response.
Anya's indirect language should also be read within that imbalance. She is speaking to someone with authority who has an established relationship with Jimmy. Judging her for not phrasing a disclosure differently moves attention away from the people responsible for hearing and acting on it.
05
Curly's concern does not secure her safety
Curly's role makes Anya's disclosures a test of his leadership. He can care about the people around him while still responding inadequately to a threat. His familiarity with Jimmy shapes how he approaches the situation, and the attempt to preserve relationships leaves Anya exposed.
This is why sympathy and responsibility need to remain separate. A sympathetic portrayal of Curly does not make Anya safe. Recognizing his later suffering does not erase the moment when his position could have supported a different response. The Curly guide discusses those failures alongside the injuries that later leave him powerless.
Anya should not be treated as an instrument for deciding whether Curly is a good person. Her need for protection has weight independently of his intentions. The useful question is what his response does for her circumstances, rather than whether the audience believes he means well.
06
Jimmy's authority magnifies the imbalance
After the crash, Jimmy takes the captain's position while Curly cannot challenge his account. Anya must continue functioning inside a group where the person she fears claims authority. Her medical duties do not shield her from his dismissiveness or give her equivalent control over decisions.
That arrangement helps explain why cooperation cannot simply be read as trust. Continuing to speak carefully, offer care or manage an interaction does not mean she feels safe. These are observations about her situation and conduct, not a diagnosis of her responses.
The Jimmy guide examines his behavior and unreliable self-presentation. When reading him alongside Anya, distinguish his explanation of events from her words and actions. A forceful account from the person claiming leadership is not automatically the most reliable account.
07
The medical-room crisis and her death
Later, Anya locks herself in the medical room. Daisuke reaches it through the damaged ventilation route and is gravely injured in the process. Anya is found dead after taking the remaining medication. The sequence ends her life; it does not open a rescue branch through a different conversation or item choice.
Her death should not be reduced to a puzzle solution or a dramatic step in Jimmy's development. It follows a story in which her safety repeatedly depends on people who fail her. Interpreting that pattern does not require imagining exactly what she thought in her final moments, which the game does not fully disclose.
For objective order, use the walkthrough. For the final outcomes, continue to the ending explanation. Anya's own story is best understood by keeping her care, disclosures and need for protection in view throughout, rather than beginning and ending with what happens to her.
