Curly is the Tulpar's captain before the crash and its severely injured survivor afterward. His story connects leadership, failures of protection and the loss of control over how others describe him. The injuries shown in the opening premise leave him unable to speak or act independently, but they do not make every accusation directed at him reliable.
The first sections cover his role and the game's opening situation with limited spoilers. A separate full-spoiler section explains who causes the crash, Curly's response to Anya and the unresolved meaning of his final appearance.
01
Curly's role before the crash
As captain, Curly is responsible for more than navigation or completing the haul. The crew depends on him when workplace problems become personal dangers. His position gives conversations with him practical consequences: listening sympathetically and changing someone's circumstances are different actions.
His relationships complicate that responsibility. Jimmy is his copilot, while Anya, Swansea and Daisuke perform other jobs essential to life aboard the ship. Curly knows them as individuals, yet he must also respond to problems in which familiarity can distort his judgment. The character overview explains the five crew roles without treating them as selectable classes.
Before drawing conclusions about Curly, pay attention to when he is speaking as a colleague and when someone needs him to exercise authority. His uncertainty can be understandable while his response remains inadequate. The story allows those observations to coexist.
02
His condition changes the balance of power
After the crash, Curly cannot speak, move independently or provide his own account of what happened. The official Steam premise establishes catastrophic injuries and dependence on the surviving crew. The game presents his body as vulnerable to their decisions, rather than giving him an ordinary conversation interface through which to defend himself.
That creates a severe imbalance. Other people can interpret his presence, make claims about his intentions and decide what care he receives. An inability to contradict someone is not evidence of agreement. The player needs to assess statements about Curly against the later scenes, not assume his silence confirms them.
This guide does not assign a medical diagnosis, prognosis or precise survival probability. The fiction establishes extreme injury and dependence; a detailed real-world clinical explanation would require evidence the game does not supply.
03
Why caring for Curly is narratively important
Anya continues providing medical care after the crash, while Jimmy is involved in giving Curly medication. The repeated interactions make dependence an action the player must confront. Curly's needs persist even when the others are frightened, frustrated or occupied with their own circumstances.
Providing a dose of medication also does not settle a person's moral character. The story places individual acts of care alongside coercion, blame and violence. A character can perform a necessary task while treating the person receiving care with little respect or using the situation to maintain control.
Watch both the action and its context. Who decides when something happens? Who explains it afterward? Whose discomfort becomes the center of attention? These questions help explain why the care scenes feel different from an uncomplicated demonstration of kindness.

Full story spoilers: the crash
Full story spoilers from this point onward, including sexual assault, the crash, bodily harm and the ending.
The late crash-day flashback identifies Jimmy as responsible for deliberately steering the Tulpar toward disaster. Curly attempts to intervene and is severely injured. That revelation overturns the opening account that directs responsibility for the crash toward the captain.
Curly's title makes the accusation initially plausible. It is also useful to Jimmy, who takes the captain's position afterward while Curly cannot answer him. The story's nonlinear presentation means the audience receives the accusation before the context needed to challenge it. Our Jimmy guide follows the difference between his actions and his account of himself.
This does not mean Curly is innocent of every failure aboard the ship. It means responsibility must be attached to the relevant action. His failure to protect Anya and Jimmy's direct responsibility for crashing the Tulpar should not be collapsed into the same claim.
05
Anya's disclosures expose his failure to act
Anya tells Curly about her pregnancy and her fear concerning Jimmy. The story strongly implies that Jimmy sexually assaulted her, though the assault itself is not shown. She needs protection from someone sharing her confined workplace, and Curly's response does not secure that protection.
His established relationship with Jimmy matters here. An attempt to keep the situation manageable can preserve an existing relationship while leaving the threatened person in danger. Whatever concern Curly expresses, Anya's immediate circumstances remain the test of whether his leadership is effective.
Calling that complicity or a failure to act is an interpretation grounded in the sequence of disclosures and responses. It should be explained through those events, rather than used as a substitute for them. The Anya guide keeps her needs and experience central, instead of treating her only as a measure of Curly's intentions.

What the developers say about his lost voice
In the official anniversary Q&A, sound designer and composer Martin Halldin explains the late image of walking out of Curly's mouth. He connects it to Jimmy speaking on Curly's behalf and to Curly previously overlooking others' behavior.
This gives a specific basis for discussing voice and agency. Before the crash, Curly has authority but does not use it effectively when needed. Afterward, he has neither an independent public voice nor control over the person speaking for him. The visual sequence brings those conditions together through the game's body horror.
Other interpretations remain possible, but they should be identified as readings. Curly's inability to speak does not reveal a complete inner monologue, a certain judgment of Jimmy or proof that he forgives anyone.
07
Does Curly survive the ending?
Curly is alive when Jimmy places him in the remaining cryopod. Jimmy then kills himself. The game ends without showing a rescue, a return to Earth, Curly awakening or any later recovery. The cryopod preserves a possibility rather than confirming a successful escape.
Jimmy's final gesture is therefore not a reliable account of Curly's future. Nor does it give Curly the opportunity to accept an apology or pronounce forgiveness. An interpretation that Jimmy wants to see himself as a savior should remain separate from what the scene establishes about the injured man.
The ending explanation follows those final events in greater detail. When discussing Curly's fate, the accurate boundary is simple: alive in cryostasis at the conclusion, eventual outcome unknown.
08
His employee card and optional achievements
Curly also has an employee-card collectible. Community walkthroughs place it near the remaining cryopod in the utility room during the later objective to obtain the gun. The official Steam achievement condition is finding his card, not changing his fate.
The same distinction applies to other optional objectives involving Curly. An achievement can reward an interaction without creating a branching rescue route. Use the achievement guide for locations and conditions, and read the character scenes as a fixed narrative about what people do with power when they possess it and how they are treated when they lose it.
