Plan for roughly 2–3 hours to finish Mouthwashing's story, while leaving room for your reading pace, exploration and puzzle solving. That is an estimate drawn from published coverage: GINX's duration guide suggests about two hours, while Game Informer's reviewer describes a three-hour playthrough. It is not an official developer runtime or a completion time measured by this site.

Finishing the story and earning every achievement are different goals. Additional attempts can extend your playtime, and the current Steam list has 18 achievements. Do not treat the story estimate as a promise that a complete achievement run will fit the same window.

01

What the 2–3 hour estimate means

The two cited reports give you a useful planning range, not a measured average across players. GINX's article, published in November 2024, describes a roughly two-hour story experience. Game Informer's review supplies a first-person account of about three hours. We have not combined those accounts into a survey, calculated a median or verified a fastest completion time.

Your first run could take longer if you stop to inspect the environment, think through the changing timeline or work out puzzles without help. Reading quickly and using solutions may reduce time spent stuck, but this guide does not assign a number to that difference. A practical approach is to reserve a comfortable block around the estimate rather than schedule the ending to a precise minute.

The publisher describes Mouthwashing as a narrative-focused first-person horror game, and Steam lists it as single-player. That helps explain the kind of experience you are planning for: a focused story aboard the Tulpar, rather than a multiplayer session whose length depends on finding a group.

02

Story time is different from playing time

Mouthwashing presents scenes from different points before and after the freighter's crash. Its title cards describe the time within the fiction. They are not a countdown showing how many real minutes remain in your playthrough.

A jump across days or months does not mean that amount of gameplay has elapsed. Likewise, revisiting a familiar room does not necessarily mean you have restarted the same objective. The narrative's presentation order and the events' chronological order are deliberately different.

For a first run, read the title cards and follow the current scene's task. You do not need to construct a complete timeline before continuing. If you lose track of the next practical step, the walkthrough follows the game's presentation order. Save broader story analysis for after the ending if you want to preserve the discoveries.

03

What can make a first playthrough longer?

Several ordinary choices affect the pace without changing the basic duration estimate:

  • Reading and listening carefully. Conversations and environmental details provide context. Taking time with them is part of the experience, even when a guide could send you straight to the next objective.
  • Exploring each space. Checking objects and looking around the ship adds time beyond simply moving between required tasks.
  • Solving puzzles unaided. Finding a clue, understanding a recipe and recognizing the correct container can take longer than entering a known solution.
  • Taking a break from the atmosphere. This is psychological horror. A schedule that leaves you room to step away is more useful than treating the estimate as a deadline.

These are planning considerations, not measured modifiers. We cannot promise that exploration adds a fixed number of minutes or that a puzzle guide removes a fixed amount of time.

04

Use focused help when a puzzle stops you

If you want to keep moving while avoiding a full walkthrough, open the guide for the obstacle in front of you. The cake puzzle guide separates the cake ingredients from the birthday drink. The gun case code guide puts the Protection Kit solution before its later story-spoiler section.

That lets you answer a narrow question without reading an account of everything that follows. Check the guide's spoiler notice before scrolling, and match its object or objective to your current scene. Similar-looking locations recur in the nonlinear story.

There is no required pace. Solving a puzzle yourself and consulting a solution are both compatible with a story-focused first run; the tradeoff is how much discovery you want to keep and how much time you want to spend on that obstacle.

05

How long does every achievement take?

There is no reliable universal total in the reviewed evidence. GINX suggests that returning for achievements could add about an hour, particularly when employee cards were missed. Treat that as the article's estimate, rather than a guaranteed extra hour for every player or every current version.

The official Steam achievement page listed 18 entries when reviewed on October 24, 2026. Older coverage and indexed snippets sometimes show 11. A duration estimate written around an earlier list does not establish how long the current complete set will take you.

Some achievements depend on optional interactions or meeting a specific condition. Story completion alone therefore does not prove you have finished the list. Your additional time depends on what you already obtained, what you missed and how much repetition you need. Our achievement guide separates the current official conditions from community-documented instructions, without claiming that every unlock has been independently tested.

Before choosing where to play, check the platforms guide. Availability and announced releases are separate from a reviewer's story duration, and the evidence here does not establish identical performance or completion time across platforms.

What this page has not measured

We have not timed an original playthrough, collected a representative player sample or tested a complete achievement route. The 2–3 hour story estimate comes from the two named publications. It excludes any invented guarantee about your pace, your remaining scenes or an exact completionist duration. Use it to make room for the experience, then let the game set its own rhythm.
